Loyalty, trust and a sense of community have characterized the Black newspaper industry since the inception of the Freedom Journal in 1827. As the nation’s first black newspaper, the Freedom Journal set the standard for Black newspapers today, addressing critical social, economic and political issues facing the African American community.

Black newspapers, along with the black church, are the nucleus of the community, inspiring, motivating and supporting a new generation of leaders.
